Another Channel Tragedy

I'm just going to leave it at this, because really, there is nothing else to say:

Hopes dashed
Like their bodies
Trying to escape death
But finding it, wet and tugging
Drowning

Out of Lockdown

Who wants to be out of lockdown?
Because we can't end this too soon.
Our safety is in the hands of a clown
Who wants to be out of lockdown,
Without a care if we swim or drown,
They're shooting for the moon.
Who wants to be out of lockdown?
Because we can't end this too soon.

Christmas Dreams and Fears

Do you dream of bright wrapped boxes
Full of expensive gifts?
Or do you fear your kids going without
If you don't get those extra shifts?

Do you dream of that after dinner feeling
Contented and well fed?
Or do you fear for another Christmas
Without a roof over your head?

Do you dream of seeing the family
How your nephews have all grown?
Or do you fear that your help won't come
Elderly and all alone?

Do you dream of falling snow
A blanket cold and white?
Or do you fear for rising seas
A world ready to ignite?

Do you dream of getting Brexit done
A nation strong and free?
Or do you fear for the vulnerable
Cast aside like human debris?

Head

Some people lose their heads
Over how others cover theirs
Many a comment has been said
Surrounding what another wears

It's more important what's in their heart
Appearance matters not
Be we will all be split apart
If we continue to allow this rot

Spike

When your beautiful car is getting covered in poo
Simply because a bird needs the loo
What springs to mind - to give it a clean?
No, not that, you're far too mean

Instead you look up and see that tree
And rather than how beautiful nature can be
You think, how horrible. Crikey! Yikes!
I must get it covered in sharp metal spikes!

This is the world of the powerful rich
Who do what they want when they have the itch
They disregard nature and disrespect it as well
Don't you just wish they would all go to hell?

Number Three

While the Royal's are lauded and paid for
When they have an extra child
Life gets harder for the poor
While the Royal's are lauded and paid for
No benefits for a third child no more
Unless you can prove you were defiled
While the Royal's are lauded and paid for
When they have an extra child

The Road Alone

A year ago we voted leave
But forty-eight percent still grieve
At the thought that we are cutting ties
Because of those remorseless lies

So is it true that half were duped
Believing money could be recouped
That there'd be no more immigration
Or bureaucratic leglislation

"Take back control, we'll be great again
Don't be silly, don't vote remain
£350 mill. for the NHS
Least that's what the side of this bus says

"Foreigners aims are to disjoint
While the country sits at breaking point
Trust us, we won't lie to you
It's not a glossy, rose-tinted view"

Or was it through desperate hope
For the poorest who can barely cope
That change, that any change, could be
The thing that makes their lives more free

But the choice is made, we've turned our backs
Saying goodbye, and making tracks
On the road alone, with far to go
To a destination we still don't know

If we've made a mistake then time will tell
We may discover that all is well
Another enlightenment may dawn
The flowering of a nation born
Or will it be like the Roman's leaving
A dark age land of self deceiving

The Masacre of Mankind

A book I have been waiting for all my life, and a book written with both love and imagination.

In a lot of ways, I have lived with the Martians for more than thirty years now. I can still remember sitting on an old sofa with a bowl of shreddies in my lap, and hearing the voice of Richard Burton for the first time tell of the coming of the Martians. By the time the first cylinder had opened on Horsell Common and the pulsating wet leather of it's contents disgorged, my breakfast was sitting soggily on the floor with my appetite vanished, with the speed of a man turned to flame by a Heat Ray.
I was terrified, and I was thrilled and I was in love with War of the Worlds (at least the musical version).
That was before I read the book, which I soon also fell in love with, although perhaps not the cover depicting the brain and tentacle combination of the Martians, which always had to go face down before I fell asleep; I would always hurry back from the darkness of the bathroom in the middle of the night lest a tentacle grab me!
And every year at midnight on the 12th August my eyes would turn skyward for a flash of green, a puff of smoke, but thankfully none came and the Earth remained un-invaded (from space at least).

And so onto the sequel, published 120 years after the original, and a book I began with both excitement and trepidation. Having known of the publication in advance, I had already read some of Stephen Baxter's books, and enjoyed them. And knowing him to be a good writer, my excitement was greater than my trepidation, and I was not disappointed.
The original story has been cleverly used and enhanced, and in a style that flows neatly from one to the other. Neat references have been made to the original book, but also to 'unofficial' sequels that came out at the time, to Orson Welles radio dramatisation and to Jeff Wayne's Musical version.
And it is also noticable how Baxter has obviously taken as much pleasure in destroying various worldwide major cities, as Wells did in destroying much of Woking.

So, are the Martian's stopped for a second time? And how, for they will surely not succumb in the same way as before? You will have to read it to find out. And was the book any good? Well, I have read War of the Worlds more times than I can remember, and I think that this book will end up being read almost as many times in the future, and I can think of no better way of saying that I loved it, than that.

Firing the Gun

So the gun has been loaded
And we're pulling the trigger
As the shooting begins
You can hear Nigel snigger

Were they lies that they told us
With Gove looking shifty
Exhorting us to war
Over Article 50

But maybe we can hope
For a new golden dawn
Long lasting summers
With cricket on the lawn

At least that's what they told us
The vote to end all votes
No more illegal immigration
Or refugee boats

So now comes the battle
Or renegotiation
The continent looming
Over our faded nation

It won't be a fair fight
Much like a stick to a tank
Or a would-be homeowner
Denied again by a bank

Will they cut our supply lines?
Besiege our wet isle?
Are we really significant
Or in Edwardian denial

We voted knowing nothing
And we know nothing still
Except there'll be losses to both sides
As economic graves fill

Nonsense

They'll say what they want to say
And you'll believe it if you will
In cries of wild abondon
Loud, desperate, shrill

There's no logic in what they're saying
There really is no sense
Why is someone not an expert
If they're gay and used to fence?

And what's so undemocratic
In letting MP's have a say?
They're our elected representatives
Unlike election untested May

The truth is a right wing media
Peddling lies in a right wing land
Where tolerance and diversity
Crumble daily like towers of sand

Barriers

The age of the wall has returned

The age of the wall has returned?

Trident

Green tipped and glowing
They'll stand in the bays
The phallic obelisks
Of bygone days
Of Cold War paranoia
Gripping us like ice
A fear that is costly
And we pay the price

So why not disarm
With a casual shrug
Surprise all opponents
With a smile and a hug
What should scare us most
Is a doomsday device
Which we happily condone
Without thinking twice

For it does not defend
It retaliates
An eye for an eye
It's revenge that it sates
Can peace only be kept
If we stand at the brink?
On the verge of destruction
Hoping others will blink

But still the world rages
When perhaps it should repent
Over all the lives wasted
Over all the money spent
If there is collective conscience
Then we'll all collect the guilt
When nuclear war commences
Seeing the flower of mankind wilt

Farewell

Farewell my friends
But then all love affairs
Must have their ends some day
And as we fade away
Into our island mist
Like the ghosts of old
In Celtic times
We will have our memories
Of how we kissed
In Paris, in Vienna
In Rome where all roads lead
But no more
Of that European tour
And with moist eyes, goodbye
Our sharpened sword
Awaits the fatal deed

Vote

Immigrants from a foreign land
Their welcome overstayed

Worshipping a minority God
To which many have never prayed

Workshy and taking from the state
Living lives at our expense

So we must take our country back
And end this Royal pretence

Imagine a country for the workers
With wealth in common held

The diseased trees of nobility
All cauterised and felled

And spreading across the continents
A soothing salve of peace

Equality for everyone
Where bitterness will cease

So don't let them misdirect you
And fill your heart with fear

They hide who truly has the power
For the sake of their career

It's not the question we should be asking
This should be a different vote

Laying siege to their entitlement
And drain away the moat

The River Forking

They had followed the river for years, small groups joining the throng from time to time as it moved through the scarred, deserted valleys. Food was sparse, but enough, whilst the river provided all the water they required.

One day they came to a fork in the river, and a discussion was held over which direction to take. One fork led away into the far unseen distance through a landscape similar to the one they were used to. The horizon above the other fork, however, appeared to be a hazy blue-green in colour.

“Look!” some said, pointing to the North East. “There are green fields. That must be a verdant land to cater for all our needs. We will be able to take back control of our own lives by planting crops and animal husbandry, rather than relying on foraging what we can as we travel.”

“But how can you be sure?” Said others, as they pointed to the North West. “At least on this path we know where we are headed, and know that we can find food and shelter. Why take the risk into the unknown?”

“Listen!” The first group said. “Hear your experts! They do not know but they are afraid of change. They have no new answers for you. We have allowed our numbers to grow too large and now there are too many of us to be supported within this landscape.”

“But it will cause fighting amongst ourselves if you prove to be wrong and there is not enough food.” Responded the second group.

And so it went on, with each argument infused with greater fear than the last until a great confusion reigned amongst the populace. To them, it seemed, whatever they chose would cause War and Famine and Pestilence. There would be a great Suffering by all concerned and Disaster would befall their community.

Eventually they decided that each person would choose for themselves, as the leaders were so petrified of making the wrong choice, they would rather make none at all. The majority chose the North West path, as it was a landscape they trusted and knew how to eke an existence out of. But a few chose to travel towards the inviting hazy blue-green on the horizon.

Over the long days they found the distant haze slowly begin to take on a darker hue. The hopeful green shade diminished in favour of the blue, before becoming purple and black, until they realised that they were staring at a range of bare mountains, rising up from the other side of a deep chasm.
Their fork was throwing itself off their side of the chasm, falling with a deafening roar that echoed amongst the rock formations like giant flapping birds.

“What do we do?” some asked. “Do we turn back?”

“No. There is no turning back. You made your decision at the fork. You were brave and curious. You trusted your instinct for freedom over the control that the others would have forced you to bend to. Have we not too been able to feed ourselves since the parting?”

“Yes”. They replied. “But now what? There is no verdant land here, nor on the other side of the chasm. And we dare not leave the river for losing access to water”.

“It is simple. Do you not see? We throw ourselves over with the water and carry on following the river until we reach our perfect green and pleasant land.

“It will be for us only, because we will be the only ones brave enough to take the difficult path and it will be our reward for perseverance. And we will defend it from all comers”

The people were unsure, but since their leaders were so sure of an outcome which they all craved, they slowly formed up a line on the edge of the chasm, with the water rushing headlong down by the side of them, growling like a fearsome dragon. They all held hands with one other and closed their eyes in this leap of faith.

Until suddenly the cry went up.

“Jump!”

Inept

Oh! How our leaders were inept
And how we kept
Our misgivings to ourselves
But we could have wept
At their indecision-making.

For we knew we could
Be so much more adept
Had we worked our tasks
At the same time as we slept

But we did not wish
To find that we had overstepped
The mark; Thence to be cast adrift
In the chasm in which we'd leapt.

Ravens

What is truth?
And what is memory?
When we look back
What do we see?

A labyrinthine
Convoluted past
A mirage of magic
And shadows cast

Flickering torches
In tunnels of the mind
Where we see what we think
We want to find

Perceived wrongs
And imagined slights
You could have succeeded
Given fairer fights

Or of a warming
Rose tinted glow
In the hope that it was better
All those years ago

These twin ravens
Can misdirect us
Confuse, confound
And disconnect us

Beware that your memory
May be leading you astray
Truth isn't what it always seems
In the cold hard light of day

Fictions

Do they truly despise the poor
Or have they spun a web of lies
To deceive themselves into a war
Which they could not have fought
If ever they attempted
To spare a thought for their victims

Fictions cannot be strange to them
Evidenced by their depictions
Of the so-called-lazy, and work shy
Simply caricatures dreamed up
By crazy, swivel-eyed loons
But it's them it lampoons

And so to their latest foray
Showing that nothing
Will get in their way, not even
Double speak and misrepresentation
To sneak in a story
To deceive and distract
In which can be found no basis or fact

Survival

It's the monetisation
Of survival
And of health
Where those allowed to live
Are those
With the wealth
If you're too poor to pay
I'm afraid
You'll have to die
The excuse
"We can't afford it"
The reason why
So isn't it time
To have diseases defeated
To say whoever
And wherever you are
You'll be treated

Courses

We should all set up camp
On the golf course.
At least the ones who see
The ramping up
Of rental fees.
While the old-timers
Swing to their hearts content.
Oh! To own a tent
And our bit of green.
If all the golf courses
Were paved over
With more than just good intentions.
Then a saved deposit
Might be worth more
Than just an iron
In the overheated
Housing market furnace.
