Permission

Sometimes we need permission
To speak to a stranger
Eye contact
Over a shared frustration
At yet another delayed train
Or helping to pick up
A dropped item; spontaneous smiles
Over a funny comment
The absurdity of silence
That pervades buses, trams and train
Carriages demands a change
Or at least a badge
That reads "You may speak to me"
